I moved abroad — what about my Indian account?

I moved abroad — what happens to my Indian resident account?

Direct answer. Once you become a person resident outside India under FEMA, your existing resident savings or current account must be redesignated to NRO (and you should open NRE / FCNR for foreign earnings). Continuing to operate a resident account as an NRI is a FEMA breach.

Who this applies to

If any of these sound like you.

  • Recently relocated NRIs and OCIs
  • Anyone on a long-term overseas assignment
  • Students moving abroad for multi-year programmes
The detail

What the rules actually say.

01

When the change is triggered

FEMA residential status changes the moment your intent and stay pattern qualify you as a person resident outside India — typically when you leave India for employment, business or an indefinite stay. It is not tied to the end of a financial year.

02

What to do, in order

Notify your bank, redesignate the resident account to NRO, open an NRE account for foreign earnings, and (optionally) an FCNR(B) deposit. Update KYC, PAN address, and demat / mutual fund records to your new status.

03

Why this matters

Banks increasingly cross-reference passport, immigration and tax data. A long-running resident account used by an NRI can lead to account freezes, FEMA queries, and difficulties when you later try to remit funds abroad.

Common questions

Answered, candidly.

Can I just keep using my old account if I am back in India a few months a year?
Not safely. FEMA status follows intent and stay pattern. If you are based abroad for work, you are a non-resident even if you visit India each year — the account should be NRO.
What about my joint resident account with a parent?
The account can usually continue as a resident account in the parent's name, with you redesignated as a 'former-or-survivor' or removed. Specific bank rules apply.
Do I need to redesignate demat and mutual fund accounts too?
Yes. Resident demat accounts cannot be operated by an NRI. They are typically closed and replaced with NRI-PIS or NRI-non-PIS demat accounts depending on the holdings.
